Getting started with medicines repurposing

In February and March 2023, we partnered with LifeArc to deliver a 3-part educational series to help patient groups, academics and researchers get started with medicines repurposing.

It takes a village to bring a licensed treatment to market, especially when developing it from scratch. Patient populations, time, money and resources all act as barriers to innovation. Behind these hurdles are patients desperately waiting for a new or first-of-its-kind therapy to treat their rare condition.

Drug repurposing provides hope to these individuals and families. Researchers and academics are working with a drug they already know, eliminating the guesswork about how the drug will enter, move through and exit the body. Age groups, body types and side effects are already understood.

The promise of drug repurposing is why we’ve partnered with LifeArc. We want to help patient groups and academics team up to begin repurposing research on their specific rare condition.

This 3-part educational series progresses through the drug repurposing journey using LifeArc’s newly developed Repurposing Medicines Toolkit that’s been designed with patient groups and academics in mind.

LifeArc's Repurposing Medicines Toolkit

LifeArc and Medical Research Council (MRC) created a new free online toolkit to help repurposed medicines reach patients. The new toolkit was developed in consultation with scientific, industrial, patient groups and regulatory experts to prevent promising research and treatments from failing to reach patients.

LifeArc and MRC’s toolkit consolidates and simplifies the complexities of repurposing into one, clear and actionable guide. The toolkit explores each stage of a repurposing project and outlines the challenges and opportunities faced.

These stages are:

  • Research steps for demonstrating safety and efficacy
  • The regulatory environment
  • Patient engagement
  • Accessing the medicine and existing data
  • Intellectual property (IP)
  • Funding sources

Best of all, the toolkit features case studies from those who are driving rare repurposing projects. If you’re considering embarking on a repurposing journey as a charity, researcher or academic, those currently going through the process can offer you invaluable real-life experience and advice.
