Overview of the purpose and structure of clinical research
- Clinical research is conducted to try and discover new treatments that can successfully and safely improve the lives of patients living with a disease
- Scientists identify potential new treatments for a disease in pre-clinical research. At this stage of research, scientists study human health and whether a new treatment might work using cells grown in a laboratory, animals or computer models to simulate how the human body works
- If scientists find results that suggest a treatment might work, they will progress it to clinical trials where it is given to volunteer trial participants to study its effects and value in humans
- At first, scientists test the treatment in healthy humans to make sure there are no bad side effects. They will then conduct clinical trials in patients living with a condition to understand if the treatment works and gather more information on short and long-term side effects from a larger number of patients over a longer time period
- Clinical research is needed to make sure patients taking a new treatment see improvement in their disease without bad side effects, before doctors start prescribing it
